JOB BRIEF:
- English Language Arts are part of the core curriculum offered at Manhattan-Ogden, USD 383. The primary function of a language arts instructor is to teach the English Language Arts through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The English Language Arts teacher uses a variety of media to help students appreciate the English language and acquire basic language arts skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Kansas Teaching License.
- Degree from an accredited college and university with intensive course work in physical and health education.
- All USD 383 employees must pass a background check.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
- Guides students in maintaining acceptable standards of classroom behavior.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or students group involved.
- Strives to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Demonstrates instructional and interpersonal strategies and techniques that are responsive to the cultural, ethnic, economic, and linguistic differences of students.
- Teaches all students from a culturally inclusive perspective and establishes an expectation that classroom language and behaviors value differences.
- Supports students in their efforts to discover and share their own cultural identities and teaches students the appropriate language for asking questions about the culture of other people.
- Evaluates student progress on a continual basis and reports at designated times.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
- Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
- Cooperates with other members of staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
- Other duties as assigned by administration.

About Manhattan High School:
Manhattan High School is a 9th through 12th grade high school. We have just completed a major renovation and expansion of our Manhattan High School Campus and will merge all four grade levels together in the fall of 2023. Our current 9-12 enrollment is 1,950 students. We divide and serve our student population into four teams; each assigned a grade level, and the team stays with the same group all four years. A team consists of an assistant principal, two counselors, and a secretary. Manhattan High School administration has a dedicated team focus. We work together to serve our MHS community and stakeholders in doing what is best for students and the educators that support them. Our teachers teach 5 of 7 class periods with an additional Advisory period one day a week. The 2 of 7 in a teacher's schedule is dedicated to a plan hour and an hour dedicated to professional learning. We have a modified block schedule that consists of 1-7 periods being taught Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Wednesday and Thursday are on a block schedule. Wednesday consists of 1st period, Advisory, 2nd period, and 3rd period. Thursday's schedule consists of 4th through 7th periods. Every certified staff member is provided with a MacBook Air and an iPad. Almost every classroom has a short throw projector and an Apple TV. Every student is provided with an iPad. We use Infinite Campus for our SIS (student information system), CANVAS for our LMS (learning management system), Xello for our individual plan of study system and SmartPass for our student pass system. We teach a wide variety of electives, Career and Technical Education, concurrent, dual credit, and Advanced Placement classes. We have many official and unofficial career pathways and athletic and activity opportunities with high student involvement. We have high expectations for our students and ourselves. We are always working on ways to meet the needs of our students, develop positive relationships, and improve how we teach. To do this, we use MTSS strategies and interventions. We expect everyone who works at Manhattan High School to care about students, work hard, reflect, and be willing to grow.
