Job Title: Deaf and Hard of Hearing ASL Interpreter

 

Job Brief:    

  • The Deaf and Hard of Hearing ASL Interpreter provides essential communication support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing within an educational setting. This role involves interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa, ensuring that students have equal access to classroom instruction and other school-related activities. The interpreter works closely with teachers, special education staff, and students to facilitate effective communication and learning. 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting or related field preferred.
  • Certification from a recognized interpreting organization (e.g., RID - Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) preferred.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a strong understanding of deaf culture.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:   

  • Full-time school year position
  • Based on Salary Schedule.
  • $18.00+/hr.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide real-time interpretation of classroom instruction, lectures, discussions, and other educational activities into ASL.
  • Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and hearing peers, teachers, and school staff.
  • Support and educate teachers and staff on best practices for interacting with deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment by facilitating effective communication and addressing any barriers to learning.
  • Assist students in understanding and navigating classroom materials and assignments as needed.
  • Provide guidance to students on using communication technology and other aids.
  • Ensure confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and standards.
